The wild in the world; Hell’s Gate Park

You know those old photos that used to take forever before you had them from the cameraman and/or studio? Those, coupled with scattered memories, were the only thing I had on Naivasha. And not Hell’s Gate. Lake Naivasha. I was there about 20 years ago, sigh. So I jumped right in when I heard some guys were headed there. On that note, there are very many individuals and companies that plan weekend trips to Hell’s Gate, in Naivasha, and at very nominal prices.

If you’re like me, out-of-town is your kind of thing. Beaten paths, you know. If you’re like me, you will most certainly enjoy Hell’s Gate.

Now, it probably takes an hour or so from Nairobi. It was on a Sunday so most roads were pretty clear of traffic. There’s that one feature that you probably can’t get enough of; landscapes do it for me. Given that Naivasha is in the Rift Valley, the scenery is breathtaking. A stop-over along the way will be totally worth it, and maybe you can take pictures like these:

Hell’s Gate is one of the most unique places on earth for many reasons. If you listen, everything there talks very loudly. I’m not alluding to the myths regarding the screaming souls though – heard none of that!

Walkway in the park

Walkway in the park

First, there is too much to do. One may choose to cycle their way through the park – totally worth it I must say cuz you get very close to different kind of animals. That, to me, is THE LIFE. Some of the animals to look forward to include buffalo, eland, zebra, giraffe, leopard, Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelle, impala, klipspringer, rock hyrax and Chanler’s mountain reedbuck. It’s mostly a herbivore ecosystem so no need to worry about lions and stuff.

You may also decide to climb the Fischers tower. I hear that the rock is essentially a young Maasai girl who disobeyed her parents just before her wedding. Can’t help but wonder the number of rocks we would have for every person that lies 😛

One of the tourists climbing “the girl” 🙂

While I may not have climbed the rock, I compensated by walking in the park. It was a very interesting experience. Seeing the zebras and warthogs feeding together and not get disrupted by our presence. I wonder from a distance though haha. Wild animals are just that, wild. I respect that through fear. I hope to overcome that some day – or not.

The white stuff you see on the rocks is bird droppings and nests. Some very unique species have been spotted in the park. I hear the Verreaux’s eagle has its food in the Maasai Mara then comes and poops here – like a boss!

There’s always that vague possibility of a zebra turning and eating you!

Guys, that’s just the Hell’s Gate National Park. There’s much more within the greater Hell’s gate facility. Keep it here for more from this UNESCO Heritage site.

Cheers to living the wild to the wild!
