“Hey boss, can you take a picture of us?” It’s impossible to put into perspective the number of times that phrase was used. I’m excited about this post just as much as I was about the last trip. I also hope you’ll get some girls getaway ideas. Granted, it takes a little commitment and almost as little cash to have fun.

What happens when 3 girls travel together? A lot! I just came back from one of the craziest and most random adventures ever. It was mainly characterized by laughter, chasing sunrises and sunsets, boat rides, smoking fish…

Girls getaway ideas

It started with a random message: “we should plan a girls’ getaway.” Almost immediately after the suggestion a WhatsApp group was created. Matters invention, it is fire then WhatsApp groups, no? We Googled “girls getaway ideas” and all that stuff. Couple of messages and images later, we have a destination – Jipe. None of us knows anything about the place. The mighty internet has very scanty information on the same. It’s going to be epic – that’s how you know.

We live the city after a couple of last-minute bookings. A spirit of adventure, couple of bags (;)), open minds, and our wanderlust is all we have.

Ô, Sunlight!

We get to Voi at around 4 a.m. We can either proceed to Taveta or explore Voi in the morning. You know us 😛

Weirdly, no one is tired. We do all those random and not-so-random convos and before we know it, the best time of the day is here – sunrise!

What are some of your struggles? Mine normally revolve around finding the best spots to shoot epic photographs. The sun is a prop I adore. As we try to find the ideal location, we “bump” into the SGR masterpiece. Girls need pics. “Do you think this fence is electric?” We must have asked this question more than 10 times by the end of our trip.

We couldn’t get over that one but we took shots all the same.

Old is Gold

Then, behold a garage. Who else loves vintage?

We took many spectacular images. Even more exciting, we interacted with the locals. Once in a while we had them take pictures of us. A huge chunk of them were like, “you might need to teach me how to do it” in beautifully accented Swahili. Thank God for automatic settings on cameras!

A thousand shots later, we needed to head back. But not after redefining someone’s career! I mean how many times does one get themselves taking shots on a railway line then a train appears? We were all shades of ecstatic. I still think of what the train’s captain might have thought. Three girls, early morning, right in front of his moving train. He hooted endlessly; we gave in. In case you’re wondering, that was, for me, the highlight of the trip.

The old railway will be missed. Will it still be operational?

The KWS bandas at Lake Jipe are on a self-catering basis so we needed to shop around. I will save you the gory details, for now.

The road to Taveta from Voi is straight up amazing! If you’re lucky like us, you also get to see elephants along the way. The county has uncountable (hikeable?) hills. Over the months we’ve been talking a lot about how every county has something to offer. Taita Taveta is no exception, and everyone should head out there and check it out.

The bad road narrative began when we arrived Taveta town. We had the most amazing driver. I say this not just because he allowed us to take 101 stops each time we saw something sensational, but because he took beautiful pictures too!

Mboga Chronicles

Both nights in Taita were spent in the KWS bandas at Lake Jipe. The staff there were super amazing and also very curious on what three girls were doing on the road alone. Fish at the lakeside is called “mboga”, and we had plenty of that thanks to them.

We spent around 3 days and 2 nights in the greater Taveta County. There is quite a lot to do there. I will describe every place we visited in greater detail in the next post. This should include how to get there, budget and all that.

In just a few days, we managed to create memories that will last forever. Add calories that will take a minute to burn. We discussed ideas that will definitely turn into something great in the near future because we will work on them with all our energy.

I learned a lot of things from this trip. What tops the list, however, is that women can achieve so much if they combined their energies. We’ve been known to be consumed by jealousy and meaningless competition. Relax, we will all get there.

From any perspective and by any standard, this trip had epic written all over it from the very beginning. I would definitely be willing to drop everything and embark on such, soon.
