Road trip in Kenya? Here’s a cheat sheet

road trip kenya

Looking for road trip ideas in Kenya especially now that the holidays are here? Well, I got you. These will cover some of the least visited yet very authentic places in the country.

In no particular order, here are some of the road trip destinations you should check out!

Road trip to Nyeri County; #19

This is one of the most beautiful counties in Kenya. Most roads are tarmacked, making it quite the experience. A road trip to Nyeri would be ultimate adventure since they have animals, Mount Kenya, conservancies, waterfalls… they have everything! Here are my top attractions in the County.

Kinga conservancy

Found in Kieni Constituency, Nyeri County, this is one of the serenest places ever. What with the never-ending forest, twin waterfalls, huge rocks… and carrots ?. Go there with your friends and have a time of your life. It is also ideal for solo travelers. Some of the activities there include camping, abseiling, nature walks, star gazing and rock climbing among others. Owh, they make the best goat meat!

Zaina Falls

Those guys who don’t like hiking but enjoy waterfalls: here’s your time to shine! A very polite walk leads to a waterfall that’s 100 meters (tall?). It is very scenic there, and you are guaranteed to have the best time. Carry some snacks with you, and have a picnic while enjoying the sound of the falling water. PS: It gets very cold so bring warm clothes with you. A rain jacket will also come in handy but you could easily do without.

This is not a comprehensive list of the places in Nyeri County, it is meant to stir curiosity.

Road trip to Taita Taveta; County #006

This easily one of the best places I have been to. The county is home to Tsavo West, and has lots more to offer. Btw Taveta remains one of the most underexplored regions in the country. Home to Lake Jipe, Lake Chala, Mzima Springs, Shetani lava, and other places, you can never go wrong with #006. There are also numerous hiking spots that offer the best views. The people are very friendly, the weather is mostly warm, and most roads are good (the bad ones are terrible and can easily disorganize your trip). Again, be very open minded, and try discover other places on your own.

Road trip to Nakuru County; #32

This county is strategically located, making it easily accessible from most parts of the country. What do you love? Waterfalls? Mountains? Craters? Whatever you like is in #32. Lake Elementaita is great for camping, birding, taking pictures of perfect reflections for no reason… They also have Bomas of Nakuru which is pretty cool but manned by some of the most disinterested staff I’ve come across in a while. Kariandusi historical site is also in #32, and is a really cool place. If you’re into history like me, you’ll have the best time. I did a post about it here. I get controversial sometimes, FYI ? Hike the Menengai crater, go to Lake Nakuru… you won’t run out of stuff to do, I promise.

Road trip to Nyandarua County; #18

The only place in Kenya that snows. Mount Kenya does not count; case closed. I have spent a considerable part of my life in Nyahururu, and I still can’t have enough of it. The town is always a plan, the County is an even bigger plan. Visit Thompsons Falls, Kirururumo- it is more powerful that way, and experience nature’s power first hand. After that, cross the road and see the largest collection of hippos in Africa at the hippo point. Yea you read that right. This country Kenya, sigh.

Road trip to Laikipia County; #31

This county is proof that arid is not necessarily bad. There are countless ranches scattered across the county where fun is guaranteed. For some of them, you might need to sell a kidney. There are other very affordable ones though. Make a stop at Ol Pejeta and laud them for their conservation efforts. That’s also home to the world’s last white rhino. It’s a shame. I wonder how we got here. If you keep your eyes open, there’s always something new to check out in #31.

Road trip to Kisii and Kajiado Counties; #45 and #34

Look, I’m really trying my best not to take sides here. These two make it very difficult for me. You will have so much that you’ll start asking around for land to purchase. You’ll want to settle down there, throw your phone away, and change your name to Kerubo. Well, that’s only if you are always game for fresh air, organic food, very kind people, and sugarcane you can easily chew on ?. These counties share lots of resources which is why I chose to talk about them together. Kajiado has the best goat meat though, obviously!

Road trip to Kilifi County; #003

Kilifi is not in Mombasa, my Nairobi people ?. So this is home to the best sunsets you’ll ever experience. How many beaches in Kilifi have you been to? There are dozens of them that are very deserted, hence clean. Our grand canyon-equivalent, Hell’s Kitchen, is found in Malindi. If you’ve never been awed by nature, call your buddies, take a road trip to Malindi then come tell us what you think. These are some of the instances where a refund policy should apply!

Road trip to Turkana County; #023

This keeps getting harder for me. Now, this was one of my most sobering trips this year. So many lessons. Drive there for the best sunrises and sunsets, crazy boat rides, picnics on deserted islands, propose… you can be anything you like in Turkana. BTW it’s so much fun on an overland truck. A tortoise will prolly get there before you, but it will get you there, and you will have loads of fun doing it. I’m hoping they start sandboarding gigs and desert cruises there soon. That would be fun, right?

My sun sets to rise again 🙂

I’m gonna stop there because all this is driving me crazy. Kenya is beautiful. Leave your village go see how your neighbors make ugali. Ask for water in a different language… purpose to travel this coming year.

Adios!

I don’t know if there’s going to be another post before 2018 so it’s prolly the best time to get all-emotional. Guys, this year has been real. Thank you for all the support. Thanks for reading, for your comments, the shares, thanks for everything. Also, thanks for voting for us in this year’s BAKE Awards. Next year holds bigger things; no doubt about that. We recently concluded a competition for a free Zip Lining trip. Thanks for participating. Okay, Google will now flag me for all the thanks. I appreciate you ? ? ?

BTW, once you visit one of these places, be sure to tag us to pics. It’s a community, as always. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for contacts. I’ll stop talking now ?

Light and love!

Cheers to the holidays!
